New student registration occurs between June 12 and June 18. You will be notified of your registration time. Some seats are held back for all sections to accommodate later registration times, so try not to worry if it appears that all classes are filling before your time. There is, however, a chance that the exact courses and times that you desire will be filled, so you should have backup times and courses in mind when you register.

If you are considering a biology major, the department recommends that you register for Biology 121 and Chemistry 111. Chemistry 111 is a prerequisite for Cell Biology which is one of the core courses required of all biology majors. There are electives that you can take in your sophmore year if you would like to wait to take chemistry, but you will be limiting your elective options by waiting. If you have questions or concerns about taking two lab sciences your first semester in college, please feel free to contact me to discuss your individual case. You can find more information regarding the requirements for the biology major under the courses of study/biology tab in the 2008 - 2009 academic catalog.

If you are considering medical school, the premed advisory committee recommends that you take introductory biology at UMW. There appears to be a trend among medical schools towards not accepting AP biology credit. If you already have AP biology credit, you can still register for Biology 121. As an alternative, UMW is offering a new course in the fall, Biology 125, that is an introductory biology course that is designed to accomodate students with some biology background. Again, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me to discuss your individual case.

As additional courses, you should be considering fufilling some general education requirements. Keep in mind that the first year seminar is a requirement and that if you do not register for one in the fall, you will have to register for one in the spring. You can find additional information on the general education requirements and what courses fill each component under the academic programs and requirements tab in the 2008 - 2009 academic catalog .

If you have any additional questions about registration, please post a question or email me.
