Dr. Zies is in her second year as an assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences. She received her doctoral degree from the University of Florida in 2003 for her studies on the molecular characterization of an ion transporter expressed in the kidney. Before coming to UMW in 2006, Dr. Zies worked as a post doctoral research fellow at the Mayo Clinic Center for Basic Cancer Research. Her project was focused on the hormonal regulation of genes associated with colon cancer. Dr. Zies’ current research interest is in the regulation of genes associated with genetic disorders. Deborah teaches Biological Concepts (BIOL 121), General Genetics (BIOL 341), Molecular Biology of the Gene (BIOL 430) and Freshman Seminar (FSEM100EE). Her office is located in the Jepson Science Center room 330.
